Plan on proper recycling of pesticide containers
July 20, 2010
Producers have a no-cost option to recycle their empty, clean pesticide containers through a South Dakota Department of Agriculture program.
Jim Wilson, South Dakota Cooperative Extension pesticide education coordinator, said all containers that previously contained crop protection chemicals are accepted, provided they have been properly triple- or pressure-rinsed.
State Agriculture Department staff will pick up containers at locations around the state through Sept. 16.
It is preferred that producers remove the lids, plastic sleeve labels, and any auxiliary paper labels or booklets at the time they rinse the containers. A single layer of glued-on paper label can remain on the containers.
“The most important thing is to have the containers properly rinsed,” said Wilson
Ask at your county Extension office for the location of the nearest collection site. Or find information about pickup locations and dates at the state Department of Agriculture website at this link: http://sdda.sd.gov/ag_services . The link to the 2010 Pesticide Container Recycling Collection Schedule is located in the "Hot Topics" box on the page.
