Laird Larson

In December 2003, Laird Larson of Clark was appointed by Governor Mike Rounds to the SD Wheat Commission.

He has been active in the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association (SDCIA), serving on the county board of directors for nearly 20 years. He also served as state president and member of the SDCIA board of Directors. Larson has been a seed associate for SoDak Genetics.  He has served on numerous farm organization boards, as well as holding leadership positions in church and community groups.

Larson began farming in 1971 near Clark. He started seed processing in 1983 with a portable mill and then went to a stationary mill in 1987.  Larson believes that producers have to take advantage of value-added opportunities. "In our operation, growing certified seed has added value, not only from seed sales, but through increased yields and quality by constantly selecting new and improved varieties as they are released," Larson said.

"The interaction between seed growers, the Crop Improvement Association, Ag Experiment Station, and breeders has been beneficial in selecting new varieties for South Dakota," Larson said.  "I strongly believe in the public breeding programs and the need to keep them alive and healthy.  The SD Wheat Commission has staunchly supported SDSUs new varieties development over the years and I look forward to continuing that cooperation."

"I am honored to have this opportunity to work with the Commission," Larson said.  "Having worked with the Commissioners on related projects in the past, I know the dedication of these men and their resolve to improve the livelihood of wheat producers."

Larson and his wife, Kathy, farm near Clark. They have three grown children.

The SDCIA recognized Larson as its Premier Certified Seed Grower for 2003 at the Annual Ag Horizons Conference and in August Larson was named one of South Dakota State University's Eminent Farmers for 2003.

Larson has served for 17 years on the Northeast Research Farm Advisory Board and as vice president of the South Dakota FFA Foundation Board.  He has worked to raise funds for renovating SDSU greenhouses, and is currently working to develop a seed science center at SDSU.
